How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed SensorCharles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.
The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It can be a bit difficult to test since there are different connector pins, and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when i start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start when the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is connected however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.
I'm not certain what to do, i believe that i've ruled out everything else. But i'm worried audi replacement car keys that I might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please share them! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or at a parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on new audi car key the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU audi replacement car keys that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.
The signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev audi a3 key replacement counter and gears that shift faster than normal, and/or a misfire when in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. The good thing is that they are quite affordable and readily available, especially if you're looking at a Bosch here sensor, which is what we have. 5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous issues with your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission of your Audi since it sends information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the engine is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components of the car to be affected.
The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to regulate fuel, timig, and boost and then sends it on to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these points. This is a standard part across the Audi 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good parts could be found in wrecking yards.
